U.S. News ranks OBX top Family Beach!

U.S. News ranks OBX as top family beachbanxboundblog

The Outer Banks of North Carolina attracts over 7 million visitors a year along its two-hundred miles of barrier island beaches.  I’m excited to see this article in U.S. News and hope it encourages new visitors to the area.

Many Hampton Roads locals, including me, flee to OBX over the more commercial Virginia Beach for summer vacations and long weekends, lured by the beautiful beaches, relaxing atmosphere, and short drive. If I ever win the lottery, it’s where you’ll find me…writing on the beach.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

banxboundblogBodie Island Lighthouse will open for climbing this spring!

Bodie Island Lighthouse is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina off Mothers Day At OBx 040of Route 12, south, near Oregon Inlet. You may have visited the lighthouse and grounds during your previous trips, but this spring you will be able to climb 156 feet to the top of the black and white horizontal striped tower.

For history buffs, this is the third lighthouse named Bodie.  Two previous lighthouses were built south of Oregon Inlet. The first tower built in the mid 1800’s fell to poor design and the second was destroyed during the Civil War. The current tower was completed in 1872 and automated in 1954.  Bodie’s light can be seen for almost twenty miles.

During my many years of visiting the Outer Banks, Bodie Island Lighthouse has never been open to climb, so I can’t wait to trek up with camera in hand. Exciting for new for OBX residents and visitors alike! http://outerbanksvoice.com/2013/02/12/bodie-island-light-opens-to-climbers-this-spring/
