Romance Writers Weekly – Celebrity and Character Crushes

RWW bannerThis week on Romance Writers Weekly, Kathryn Renard is asking about celebrity crushes. Do authors have them and what makes the person crush worthy. And if we’ve ever crushed on a character we’vedream dancer written.  Hope you’ve visited Leslie Hachtel who proceeded me on the hop. She has a new release just out, The Dream Dancer. Love the cover!

Celebrity crushing has been ongoing in my life since the age of seven, starting with Commander Chekov of the USS Enterprise. Stop counting how many years ago that was!

Cataloging through my list of crushes from movies/TV, pop stars, to gods of Rock is surreal. Stories in my head with my favorite characters began as a kid to check boredom, worry, and sometimes loneliness. A coping mechanism that still works today through words on a page.

I’ll admit that a crush on Maximus from Gladiator brought my first novel to life. Beginning as fan fiction, the story turned an epic historical where a Roman Centurion falls for his Tribune’s daughter who happens to be a healer and becomes a surgeon in her father’s legion. The reason I fell for Maximus was that he lived and died by a code. For me, loyalty is at the top of list for character traits. The ability to kick ass is a close second.

As far as crushes on my own characters, Ray Andrews, the hero in my firefighter novel, Hot as Blazes is the largest crush thus far. However, he is literally smoke. I didn’t take him from an actual person, only a sum of parts.

He’s built like an NFL tight end with a handsome mug, but shies from the attention his looks foster. He comes off as a player to the heroine because he’s never been serious with women. He only wants her, but until now a promise kept him from revealing his feelings. He’s a man of few words and speaks through actions.

Now that you know I’m a head case, on to Kathryn Renard who wanted to know our dark secrets.  Yep, I’m heading there now. Maybe she’s a closet Justin Bieber fan! LOL!

Romance Writers Weekly: My Current Cast

RomanceWeeklyThis week on Romance Weekly, Victoria Barbour wants us to show the cast of our most recent book or work in progress. Hope you already visited the awesome Patti Fiala and found her cast of characters from Danny’s War, her work in progress. Her newest release is Rydin’ the Storm Out.

JaceDani_HotAsBlazesI’d like to introduce everyone to the characters who appear in my June release, Hot as Blazes.

Jo Mercer’s west coast surfing career tanked. She returns home the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but her plans to rebuild her life are complicated by a her brother’s best friend, Ray, now a hunky firefighter. He’d never shown any interest in her beyond friendship until now. She’s been secretly in love with him since forever.

Ray Andrews can’t believe Jo has finally returned home. He couldn’t be happier, but she’s not the same girl that Bobby and he put on the plane nearly five years ago. California has hardened her and made her wary. He’s anxious to share romantic feelings he’s kept hidden, but values their friendship and isn’t sure she feels the same.

Bobby Mercer worked his way up to lieutenant in the local police department while his best friend, Ray, was soldiering and his sister surfed on the west coast. He recently met a jewelry artist named Sarah and believes she’s the one.

Harley left his SEAL unit after the thrill of a gunfight lost it’s allure. He operates a small oceanfront bar called Pappagayos while doing the occasional undercover job. He instantly recognizes Jo Mercer when she walks into his place for a beer and offers her a part-time job bar tending.  He and Ray have a history that Jo can’t decipher not does he want her to.

Tami needs a decent job including benefits on a high school diploma.  She and Jo become buddies when they walk through the physical agilities test for the fire academy. She’s always on the prowl for hot firefighters and earns a nickname for her unusual escapades.

Hope you’ve enjoyed meeting my cast of characters and will check out Hot as Blazes on June 9.  Next on the blog hop is the amazing Jami Denise, author of the sizzling Jayne series.
