Game On! A cold fish #8Sunday

Game On! is a short story I’m serving up on Weekend Writing Warriors for #8Sunday.

A semi-pro football player meets a reserved teacher who intrigues him with an offer of a different type of game. In last week’s 8 Heath called Jordan darlin when she asked if he was from the South. Her adverse reaction stunned him. In this week’s snippet they have left the beach and are back at their vehicles where their two friends are scheduling to meet later…

The word darling had sent Jordan into fight or flight mode. Her gut reaction to the endearment proved she wasn’t completely over being burned by Richard. If she hadn’t been so gullible, she wouldn’t have become news fodder as a business man’s plaything. She’d lost her self-esteem, ability to trust, and nearly her livelihood.

Heath’s southern pronunciation of the word sounded sexy and he might have asked her out if she hadn’t sudden turned into a cold fish.

Gigi and Dugan scheduled their later rendezvous while Jordan gazed at Heath, her sunglasses concealing her apprehension.

“We could tag along, if you’re interested,” he said with his hand lingering on the top of the convertible’s door.

“Thanks, but – maybe I’ll see you down at the beach sometime,” she said, offering a reserved smile.

Game On! Don’t call me darlin, darlin #8Sunday

weekend_writing_warriorsveteransbadge_4Game On! is my short story I’m serving up on Weekend Writing Warriors for #8Sunday.

A semi-pro football player meets a teacher who intrigues him with an offer of a different type of game. While tossing the football at the beach, Heath and his teammate start up a conversation with a couple women after nearly hitting them with a misfired pass.  After some friendly teasing she asks if he’s Southern because of his dialect and he replies, “I’m originally from South Carolina, dahlin.”

Jordan recoiled as if slapped, sank back into her beach chair, and folded her arms over her chest. Gooseflesh pimpled along her biceps.

“I’m sorry, that was forward,” he said, softly.

“Just a sudden chill from the beer.”

He didn’t buy it. Damn, he’d never tanked with a girl by calling her darling. How could a mere endearment piss her off more than almost being nailed with a football? That’s what he wanted and needed to find out.
